Discussion of A.P. Solovey’s report “Social and professional status of women- researchers in academic science (according to the results of sociological research)”

The discussion with participation of the invited expert was held on March 5, 2018 in the Intellectual Club “Women in philosophy” at the Institute of philosophy of the NAS of Belarus, which has the aim to create a platform for dialogue, expanding professional contacts of women engaged in philosophy. The report of researcher of the Institute of sociology of the NAS of Belarus A.P. Solovey “Social and professional status of women- researchers in academic science (according to the results of sociological research)” was discussed. It was devoted to consideration of various factors that influence the specificity of social well-being of Belarusian women-researchers.

Relevance of this topic was associated with the relevance of analysis of the process of feminization of Belarusian science at the present stage of its development and determination of the degree of influence of such factors as the following: professional self-identification of women-researchers, involvement in the scientific community, satisfaction with working conditions, opportunities for career advancement.

A special emphasis in the report was placed on discussion of the issues of professional activity of women-researchers of the Academy of sciences, specificity of their value orientations, influence of marriage, motherhood, and gender stereotypes on their professional activity.

On the base of results of sociological research, A.P. Solovey made a conclusion that the majority of women-researchers of the Academy of sciences consider scientific activity to be their vocation and have the feeling of belonging to the scientific community. The desire to make a personal contribution to the development of science was also named among the factors that make women become researchers.

There were also discussed the following problems of women-researchers: double load, the need to combine professional and gender roles – researcher, mother and wife. The event showed effectiveness of work in the chosen format. The presented results of sociological research aroused interest and lively discussion. According to the participants of the Club, discussion of the reports of invited experts will deepen the understanding of the role of women in philosophy and reveal various aspects of the status of women in modern humanitarian science.
