The ensemble Upper city in Minsk. Upper City is a complex of architectural, historical and archaeological monuments of 12-19 centuries. The ensemble of the Upper Town began to form in the early 16th century on the territory of the former Upper Market (Cathedral Square, Napoleon square, Town Hall Square, from 1917 Liberty Square). During the 16-18 centuries on the square were built town hall, rows of shops, shopping arcade. Since the late 16th century dwelling houses are being built here, since the early 17th century - the monumental religious buildings. Until the 1930-ies the upper city was the principal administrative, cultural and commercial center of the city. The cultural stratum of the Upper Town of the 12-18th centuries retains remnants of the foundations of religious and public buildings of the 17-18th centuries, many things that characterize the material culture of the city.
Complex of the Upper Town was apprehended in the Minsk panorama as expressive silhouette with dominant verticals of religious buildings. The ensemble consisted of the City Hall (16th-18th centuries, in the 19th it was destroyed and rebuilt in 2004), the shopping arcade (18th – the beginning of the 20th), Church and the Bernardine monastery (founded in 1628 and reconstructed in 1740, 1984, at present time it is an archive), Bernardine church and monastery (founded in 1633, renovated in 1741, currently it is an Orthodox Cathedral), Church and Jesuit Monastery (the second half of the 17th – beginning of the 18th at), the church and monastery of the Dominicans (the 1st half of the 17th, has not preserved), Benedictine church (the second half of the 17th, has not preserved), the Church of the Holy Spirit (the beginning of 17th century, has not preserved), and the monastery of the Basilians (the first half of the 17th, in the 19th it was rebuilt and adapted for use as bureau, and now it is an office building), the theater building (the 18th century, has not preserved), etc. The works that are being held at present time on recreating the ensemble is supposed to combine the restoration and renovation of existing buildings with newly constructed objects, works on improvement for the saturation of the region with social and cultural, commercial and administrative functions.
