Peter and Paul Cathedral in Gomel

Peter and Paul Cathedral in Gomel. A monument of classical architecture. It was built at the initiative of and financed by Earl M. Rumyantsev on the project of J. Clark in 1809-1824 on the territory of the Gomel palace and park ensemble. The building has a centric composition. The plan is an elongated cross with developed transept, a short middle nave and a small sacristy. The omphalos is completed with a dome on a high light drum, which is based on four pillars in the interior. The wings of the transept and the nave are covered by flat gable roofs. The ends are solved with four six-column porticos of the Doric order, which are continued on the facades by rows of semi-columns. In the design elements of classic decor are used: triglyphs on the frieze, crackers, rounded fascias of the bays of the drum. The left side of the transept is the tomb of Earl Rumyantsev, on which a sculpture, executed by W. Demuth-Malinovsky (a copy of the sculpture by A. Canova "Goddess of Peace") is erected.
