Nesvizh Catholic church of the God’s Body

 

Nesvizh Catholic church of the God’s Body (earlier Jesuit) is the first architectural monument of baroque in Rech Pospolita. It was erected in the center of town fortifications of Nesvizh in 1587-1593 on the project of an Italian architect J.M. Bernardoni. It is the first in Belarusian architecture three-naved cross-domical basilica with the principal front, decorated with classical architectural order. The dome with the diameter of 10 meters is erected by an architect I. Brizio. Inside the central nave is covered with the vault with form removals, aisles – with crossed ones. In the northern part of the temple the sculptural headstones of the founder of the temple Radzivill Sirotka and two his sons in baroque style are situated. There are altars of the Holy Christ and Holy Virgin Maria in mannerism style. The main altar with a large picture “The Lord’s Supper” (painter F.K.D. Heski, it was restored in1980) is designed in late baroque style on the project of an architect M.Pedetti. Plastic decoration of the interior are supplemented with small altars of the 18th century: St. Ignatius, Francis, Florian, Stanislas, Catherine and etc.(carvers M. Shimanovsky, Y. Lezhbah). The walls and vaults in the interior are decorated with monumental fresco, created in 1750-1753 through initiation of the Prince M.K.Radzivill Rybonka under the guidance of an architect K.Zhdanovich on the theological program of the Roman Catholic priest Y.Pashkovsky. Monochrome painting of the bearing structure in grisaille technique imitates order decor. Frescos were renovated in 1900. There is a crypt with 120 tombs of the representatives of the Radzivills kin under the temple- one of the biggest family necropolis in Europe. It is a historical and cultural value of republican significance
