BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT THE STRUCTURE OF SCIENCE IN AUSTRIA

Austria has a long and strong tradition of scientific research, dating back at least to the foundation of the University of Vienna in 1365, and more recently producing Nobel prize laureates in the re-search fields of medicine, chemistry, physics, and economics. Today, scientific research is carried out in more than 20 universities across the country, by the numerous commissions, institutes and research units of the Austrian Academy of Science, Research Centres Austria (ARC) and also private institutes - especially in the area of social sciences. Research in Austria is characterised by relatively small and rather heterogeneous units. Around 80% of research funding is provided directly by the Austrian government. Other important contributors are the Austrian Science Fund (FWF - Fonds zur Forderung der wissenschaftlichen Forschung), the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG - Osterreichische Forschungsforderangsgesellschaft), private enterprises, the European Union and others.

SUMMARY REVIEW OF AUSTRIA-BELARUS SCIENCE & RESEARCH COOPERATION

Science and research cooperation between Austrian Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Sciences of Belarus is based on a bilateral Agreement on cooperation concluded in 2001. In 2010 it is planned to sign the Annex to this Agreement aimed on providing currency-free equivalent scientists exchange, that will promote the activization ща scientific contacts between NASB and AAS.

The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), located in Laxenburg near Vienna, has been cooperating with Belarusian researchers for more than thirty-five years. In particular, junior scientists from Belarus can apply for its annual Young Scientists Summer Programs (YSSP; for details see http://www.iiasa.ac.at). The Agreement on cooperation between IIASA and National Academy of Sciences of Belarus was signed in 2001.

Since 2001 through the Calls of Belarusian Republican Fund on Fundamental Research (BRFFR) 2 Belarus-Austria research projects bilaterally financed have been fulfilled.

A wealth of information is available in the Austrian database for scholarships and research grants (http://www.grants.at), the most comprehensive online database in Austria concerning all available research areas. Inner-Austrian grant opportunities for students, graduates and research-ers as well as incoming (to Austria) and outgoing (from Austria to ...) grants are described in this database. Moreover, research allowances, prizes and other funding opportunities can be found there. The information includes details of application conditions (application deadline and place) as well as on the duration, allocation and financing of each grant. The database is regularly updated both by the Austrian Exchange Service (OAD - Osterreichischer Austauschdienst) and directly by grant-awarding institutions.
