KLIMUK Pyotr Ilyich

First Belarusian astronaut, scientist and statesman, Hero of the Soviet Union twice



Pyotr Klimuk was born in the village of Komarovka, Brest region. In 1964 he graduated from Chernigov Higher Military Aviation School, in 1977 from the Gagarin Air Force Academy, in 1983 from the Lenin Military-Political Academy. In 1998 Klimuk became an aviation general-colonel. Since 1965 he was a cosmonaut, since 1976 - a deputy detachment commander. Klimuk took a full course of general cosmonaut training and flight training on the spacecraft “Soyuz” and orbital station “Salyut”. Klimuk carried out 3 flights as a commander in the crew of “Soyuz-13”(1973), “Soyuz-18-2” and orbital station “Salyut-4”(1975), in the international Soviet-Polish crew on “Soyuz-30” and orbital station “Salyut-6”(1978). He spent in space 78.76 hours. Since 1978 Klimuk was the deputy head, in 1991-2003 the chief of the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center.



His works include those on spectrophototografy of stars and active solar regions in the ultraviolet band, on multi-spectral phototografy of the earth's surface, on the methods of spacecraft orientation and stabilization. In 2000 he received the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences. Klimuk is an academician of the Russian Academy of Astronautics (1991), the International Academy of Sciences of Nature and Society (2000), the International Informatization Academy (2000), a corresponding member of the International Academy of Astronautics (1999), a Soviet cosmonaut (1973). Klimuk is Hero of the Soviet Union (1973, 1975), the USSR (1978) and the Russian Federation (2001) State Prize laureate. He holds the Tsiolkovsky Gold Medal from the USSR Academy of Sciences(1977), a Gold Medal from the Polish Academy of Sciences (1978), three Orders of Lenin (1973, 1975, 1978), the Order of Krest Grunwald I degree (Poland, 1978), the Order of Nobility (Kazakhstan, 1995), the Order for Service to the Motherland II degree and Friendship of Peoples (Belarus, 2002, 2007), the Order of the Legion of Honor II degree (France, 2004), and medals from Poland, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria and Afghanistan. Klimuk is an honorary citizen of Brest and Brest district. There is a bronze bust erected in his honour in the city of Brest.
